For the next 2 1/2 weeks I’ll be posting from Roma and then Pompeii! I am returning for a third year to work with the Pompeii Food and Drink Project in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. After a few days of sightseeing in and around Rome, we’ll be in Pompeii for 2 full weeks. Just like last year, I’ll be in charge of one of the drawing/mapping teams responsible for the scale plan maps of the rooms and features that are documented during the field season. I’ve packed extra pencil lead, erasers, sun block and my wide-brimmed hat — show me to the triclinium!
Of course, it won’t all be work. I am planning on recording, in detail, assorted gelaterias, pizzerias and the various local vini that I will be sampling–it is a “food and drink” oriented project, after all. Well, I’ll be sampling assorted gelato, pizza and vino. As for how much effort goes into the “recording” part remains to be seen.
In addition to eating, drinking and mapping, I am planning on dragging Lyn along the ancient “Triumphal Way” in Roma, at least one trip to Pizzeria Da Remo in the Testaccio neighborhood, a stop by the Giolitti shop, a side trip to Hadrian’s Villa and a quick run through the House of Augustus on the Palatine. We’ll also take our weekend off in Pompeii to make our way down the Amalfi Coast to Minori to visit the ancient Roman located in the center of town. I’ll make every attempt to find the “internets” and post regularly. Until then, “Ciao” and Happy Solstice!
